What is Hired & Non-Owned Auto liability coverage?

Hired automobile insurance provides liability protection for bodily injury and property damage when you or an employee is driving a rented, hired or borrowed vehicle. Non-owned automobile insurance provides the same kind of coverage when an employee occasionally has to drive his or her personally-owned vehicle for business purposes. It is considered non-owned since it is not registered or contracted in the company's name. If you or your employees drive vehicles not owned by your business for business purposes, then you need hired and non-owned automobile coverage.

There are many situations that present a potential for you to be held accountable for the actions of your employees while they are driving their own vehicles, and you may be sued for damages. Some examples are:

  • If employees use their own vehicles to go to the post office or bank on your company's behalf
  • If you occasionally send an employee to coach at an off-site location
  • If you rent a vehicle while on a trip to visit another box or to bring a team to a competition

Typically, an employee's personal automobile insurance will provide primary insurance to both the employee and the business if the employee is using their own vehicle on company business. However, there is the chance that charges will exceed the employee's policy limit and would then be passed on to the company.

The CrossFit RRG Liability policy includes Hired and Non-owned automobile liability coverage.
